But / In their recent work / The supposed…does not 是转折信号。

P1In his book The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell argues that “social epidemics” are driven in large part by the actions of a tiny minority of special individuals, often called influentials, who are unusually informed, persuasive, or well connected. The idea is intuitively compelling, but it doesn’t explain how ideas actually spread.

P2The supposed importance of influentials derives from a plausible-sounding but largely untested theory called the “two-step flow of communication”: Information flows from the media to the influentials and from them to everyone else. Marketers have embraced the two-step flow because it suggests that if they can just find and influence the influentials, those select people will do most of the work for them. The theory also seems to explain the sudden and unexpected popularity of certain looks, brands, or neighborhoods. In many such cases, a cursory search for causes finds that some small group of people was wearing, promoting, or developing whatever it is before anyone else paid attention. Anecdotal evidence of this kind fits nicely with the idea that only certain special people can drive trends.

P3In their recent work, however, some researchers have come up with the finding that influentials have far less impact on social epidemics than is generally supposed. In fact, they don’t seem to be required at all.

P4The researchers’ argument stems from a simple observation about social influence: With the exception of a few celebrities like Oprah Winfrey—whose outsize presence is primarily a function of media, not interpersonal, influence—even the most influential members of a population simply don’t interact with that many others. Yet it is precisely these non-celebrity influentials who, according to the two-step-flow theory, are supposed to drive social epidemics, by influencing their friends and colleagues directly. For a social epidemic to occur, however, each person so affected must then influence his or her own acquaintances, who must in turn influence theirs, and so on; and just how many others pay attention to each of these people has little to do with the initial influential. If people in the network just two degrees removed from the initial influential prove resistant, for example, the cascade of change won’t propagate very far or affect many people.

P5Building on the basic truth about interpersonal influence, the researchers studied the dynamics of social influence by conducting thousands of computer simulations of populations, manipulating a number of variables relating to people’s ability to influence others and their tendency to be influenced. They found that the principal requirement for what is called “global cascades”—the widespread propagation of influence through networks—is the presence not of a few influentials but, rather, of a critical mass of easily influenced people.

31. By citing the book The Tipping Point, the author intends to B

  • A. analyze the consequences of social epidemics.
  • B. discuss influentials’ function in spreading ideas.
  • C. exemplify people’s intuitive response to social epidemics.
  • D. describe the essential characteristics of influentials.

定位…Gladwell argues that “social epidemics” are driven…by…influentials… The idea is intuitively compelling, but it doesn’t explain how ideas actually spread.(P1)

32. The author suggests that the “two-step-flow theory” D

  • A. serves as a solution to marketing problems.
  • B. has helped explain certain prevalent trends.
  • C. has won support from influentials.
  • D. requires solid evidence for its validity.

定位…a plausible-sounding but largely untested theory…(P2 首句);Anecdotal evidence of this kind fits nicely…(P2 末句)

33. What the researchers have observed recently shows that A

  • A. the power of influence goes with social interactions.
  • B. interpersonal links can be enhanced through the media.
  • C. influentials have more channels to reach the public.
  • D. most celebrities enjoy wide media attention.

定位…each person so affected must then influence his or her own acquaintances, who must in turn influence theirs, and so on…(P4)

34. The underlined phrase “these people” in Paragraph 4 refers to the ones who C

  • A. stay outside the network of social influence.
  • B. have little contact with the source of influence.
  • C. are influenced and then influence others.
  • D. are influenced by the initial influential.

定位…each person so affected must then influence his or her own acquaintances, who must in turn influence theirs… just how many others pay attention to each of these people has little to do with the initial influential.(P4)

35. What is the essential element in the dynamics of social influence? C

  • A. The eagerness to be accepted.
  • B. The impulse to influence others.
  • C. The readiness to be influenced.
  • D. The inclination to rely on others.

定位…the principal requirement…is the presence…of a critical mass of easily influenced people.(P5 末句)

C 项 readiness to be influenced(乐于/易被影响)是 easily influenced people 的同义提炼。

The supposed importance of influentials derives from a plausible-sounding but largely untested theory called the “two-step flow of communication”: Information flows from the media to the influentials and from them to everyone else.

主干=importance derives from a theory;过去分词 called…修饰 theory;冒号后是理论内容。untested 一词是 32 题题眼。

each person so affected must then influence his or her own acquaintances, who must in turn influence theirs, and so on; just how many others pay attention to each of these people has little to do with the initial influential.

前句主干 each person…must influence acquaintances;后句主语是 how many… 主语从句,谓语 has little to do with…。

influential n.
persuasive adj.
plausible adj.
untested adj.
cascade n./v.
propagate v.
dynamics n.
simulation n.

P1A century ago, the immigrants from across the Atlantic included settlers and sojourners. Along with the many folks looking to make a permanent home in the United States came those who had no intention to stay, and who would make some money and then go home. Between 1908 and 1915, about 7 million people arrived while about 2 million departed. About a quarter of all Italian immigrants, for example, eventually returned to Italy for good. They even had an affectionate nickname, “uccelli di passaggio,” birds of passage.

P2Today, we are much more rigid about immigrants. We divide newcomers into two categories: legal or illegal, good or bad. We hail them as Americans in the making, or brand them as aliens to be kicked out. That framework has contributed mightily to our broken immigration system and the long political paralysis over how to fix it. We don’t need more categories, but we need to change the way we think about categories. We need to look beyond strict definitions of legal and illegal. To start, we can recognize the new birds of passage, those living and thriving in the gray areas. We might then begin to solve our immigration challenges.

P3Crop pickers, violinists, construction workers, entrepreneurs, engineers, home health-care aides and physicists are among today’s birds of passage. They are energetic participants in a global economy driven by the flow of work, money and ideas. They prefer to come and go as opportunity calls them. They can manage to have a job in one place and a family in another.

P4With or without permission, they straddle laws, jurisdictions and identities with ease. We need them to imagine the United States as a place where they can be productive for a while without committing themselves to staying forever. We need them to feel that home can be both here and there and that they can belong to two nations honorably.

P5Accommodating this new world of people in motion will require new attitudes on both sides of the immigration battle. Looking beyond the culture war logic of right or wrong means opening up the middle ground and understanding that managing immigration today requires multiple paths and multiple outcomes, including some that are not easy to accomplish legally in the existing system.

26. “Birds of passage” refers to those who A

  • A. stay in a foreign country temporarily.
  • B. leave their home countries for good.
  • C. immigrate across the Atlantic.
  • D. find permanent jobs overseas.

定位…those who had no intention to stay, and who would make some money and then go home… eventually returned to Italy for good… birds of passage.(P1)

27. It is implied in Paragraph 2 that the current immigration system in the U.S. C

  • A. needs new immigrant categories.
  • B. has loosened control over immigrants.
  • C. should be adapted to meet challenges.
  • D. has been fixed via political means.

定位That framework has contributed mightily to our broken immigration system and the long political paralysis… we need to change the way we think about categories… We might then begin to solve our immigration challenges.(P2)

We don’t need more categories;B 正反混淆——首句说今天 much more rigid,控制更严而非放松;D 正反混淆——long political paralysis 说明问题从未被政治解决。

28. According to the author, today’s birds of passage want C

  • A. financial incentives.
  • B. a global recognition.
  • C. the freedom to stay and leave.
  • D. opportunities to get regular jobs.

定位They prefer to come and go as opportunity calls them.(P3 第3句)

C 项 the freedom to stay and leave 是 come and go as opportunity calls 的同义改写。

29. The author suggests that the birds of passage today should be treated B

  • A. as faithful partners.
  • B. with legal tolerance.
  • C. with economic favors.
  • D. as mighty rivals.

定位…those living and thriving in the gray areas(P2)… With or without permission, they straddle laws…(P4)…opening up the middle ground…(P5)

30. The most appropriate title for the text would be D

  • A. Come and Go: Big Mistake.
  • B. Living and Thriving: Great Risk.
  • C. With or Without: Great Risk.
  • D. Legal or Illegal: Big Mistake.

P2 “divide newcomers into legal or illegal, good or bad… broken immigration system”,P5 “beyond the culture war logic of right or wrong”。

D 项 Legal or Illegal: Big Mistake 准确。

Along with the many folks looking to make a permanent home in the United States came those who had no intention to stay, and who would make some money and then go home.

还原=Those who… came along with the many folks…。

That framework has contributed mightily to our broken immigration system and the long political paralysis over how to fix it.

主干:framework contributed to A and B——(A)破碎的移民制度、(B)改革上的长期政治僵局。

sojourner n.
settler n.
rigid adj.
paralysis n.
straddle v.
jurisdiction n.
accommodate v.

P1In a rare unanimous ruling, the US Supreme Court has overturned the corruption conviction of a former Virginia governor, Robert McDonnell. But it did so while holding its nose at the ethics of his conduct, which included accepting gifts such as a Rolex watch and a Ferrari Automobile from a company seeking access to government.

P2The high court’s decision said the judge in Mr. McDonnell’s trial failed to tell a jury that it must look only at his “official acts,” or the former governor’s decisions on “specific” and “unsettled” issues related to his duties.

P3Merely helping a gift-giver gain access to other officials, unless done with clear intent to pressure those officials, is not corruption, the justices found.

P4The court did suggest that accepting favors in return for opening doors is “distasteful” and “nasty”. But under anti-bribery laws, proof must be made of concrete benefits, such as approval of a contract or regulation. Simply arranging a meeting, making a phone call, or hosting an event is not an “official act.”

P5The court’s ruling is legally sound in defining a kind of favoritism that is not criminal. Elected leaders must be allowed to help supporters deal with bureaucratic problems without fear of prosecution of bribery. “The basic compact underlying representative government,” wrote Chief Justice John Roberts for the court, “assumes that public officials will hear from their constituents and act on their concerns.”

P6But the ruling reinforces the need for citizens and their elected representatives, not the courts, to ensure equality of access to government. Officials must not be allowed to play favorites in providing information or in arranging meetings simply because an individual or group provides a campaign donation or a personal gift. This type of integrity requires well-enforced laws in government transparency, such as records of official meetings, rules on lobbying, and information about each elected leader’s source of wealth.

P7Favoritism in official access can fan public perceptions of corruption. But it is not always corruption. Rather officials must avoid double standards, or different types of access for average people and the wealthy. If connections can be bought, a basic premise of democratic society—that all are equal in treatment by government—is undermined. Good governance rests on an understanding of the inherent worth of each individual.

P8The court’s ruling is a step forward in the struggle against both corruption and official favoritism.

36. The underlined sentence (Para.1) most probably shows that the court C

  • A. avoided defining the extent of McDonnell’s duties.
  • B. made no compromise in convicting McDonnell.
  • C. was contemptuous of McDonnell’s conduct.
  • D. refused to comment on McDonnell’s ethics.

定位But it did so while holding its nose at the ethics of his conduct, which included accepting gifts such as a Rolex… from a company seeking access to government.(P1)

C 项 contemptuous(蔑视的)正合此意。

37. According to Paragraph 4, an official act is deemed corruptive only if it involves C

  • A. leaking secrets intentionally.
  • B. sizable gains in the form of gifts.
  • C. concrete returns for gift-givers.
  • D. breaking contracts officially.

定位…under anti-bribery laws, proof must be made of concrete benefits, such as approval of a contract or regulation.(P4)

C 项 concrete returns for gift-givers 是 concrete benefits 的同义改写。

38. The court’s ruling is based on the assumption that public officials are A

  • A. justified in addressing the needs of their constituents.
  • B. qualified to deal independently with bureaucratic issues.
  • C. allowed to focus on the concerns of their supporters.
  • D. exempt from conviction on the charge of favoritism.

定位“The basic compact underlying representative government… assumes that public officials will hear from their constituents and act on their concerns.”(P5)

A 项 justified in addressing the needs of their constituents 是 hear from…constituents and act on their concerns 的同义改写。

39. Well-enforced laws in government transparency are needed to B

  • A. awaken the conscience of officials.
  • B. guarantee fair play in official access.
  • C. allow for certain kinds of lobbying.
  • D. inspire hopes in average people.

定位…to ensure equality of access to government… This type of integrity requires well-enforced laws in government transparency…(P6)

B 项 guarantee fair play in official access 是 equality of access 的同义替换。

40. The author’s attitude toward the court’s ruling is D

  • A. sarcastic.
  • B. tolerant.
  • C. skeptical.
  • D. supportive.

定位The court’s ruling is a step forward in the struggle against both corruption and official favoritism.(P8 末句)

干扰A sarcastic(讽刺)、B tolerant(容忍)、C skeptical(怀疑)均与末句褒扬语气相反。

But it did so while holding its nose at the ethics of his conduct, which included accepting gifts such as a Rolex watch and a Ferrari Automobile from a company seeking access to government.

“The basic compact underlying representative government,” assumes that public officials will hear from their constituents and act on their concerns.

underlying representative government 是现在分词短语作后置定语修饰 compact;that 宾语从句含两个并列谓语 hear from…and act on…。

unanimous adj.
overturn v.
conviction n.
bribery n.
favoritism n.
constituent n.
prosecution n. 起诉
transparency n.
lobby v./n.
