SOUND CHANGES
Grimm’s Law

OED Forms)
晚期中古英语到 18 世纪,过去分词有三种竞争:bore、borne(长元音,来自未缩约的 boren,开音节延长)、born(短元音,来自缩约的复数 borene)。
故现代:a burden borne by all(承担)| she was born in 1990(出生)。

二者同出古英语 boren(beran 的过去分词),在早期现代英语按义分流:
born 限定「出生/天生」,作形容词或被动:be born、a born leader、born in 1990。
borne 承担「携带/承载/(完成时)生育」:air-borne(空运的)、the costs borne by the firm(公司承担的费用)、She has borne two sons(她生了两个儿子)。

berth(17 世纪航海用语,「停泊的安全空间;舱位;铺位」)常被推测为 bear(「a bearing-place / sea-room」)加名词后缀 -th。
bear 是本族高频词,但它的口语本义「携带」在现代多被 carry、take 取代:日常说 take a bag、carry a box,而不说 bear a bag。
