turn（OE turnian）并非日耳曼本族词，而是借自拉丁 tornare「在车床上旋制」，再追至希腊 tornos「车床、旋规」。它与英语本族的「转」概念（如 wheel）无关，是中世纪早期经拉丁语借入的外来词。return、overturn 等都是在借入后再加前缀构成的。
