古英语 smæl 的本义是「细、窄、瘦削」，德语 schmal「窄」保留了这个古义；英语后来才引申为泛指的「小」。它与表「数量小」的 little（古英语 lȳtel）本是两个词：small 偏「形状细窄」，little 偏「量少」。
