LATIN ROOT · L001 ·

PIE root *h₂eǵ-(拉丁传统作 *ag-) 「to drive, set in motion, lead, do」

COGNATES ACROSS LANGUAGES

SOUND CHANGES

拉丁 g 在前元音 e/i 前,经古法语软化为 /dʒ/:agent /ˈeɪdʒənt/、agile /ˈædʒl/、agitate /ˈædʒɪteɪt/。对比未软化的 act、exact(g 后无 e/i,或直接拉丁书面借入)。

拉丁 agenda 是动形词(gerundive)agendus 的中性复数,意为「things that ought to be done(应当被做之事)」;进入英语后被当成单数集合名词,故可说 a hidden agenda。

SEMANTIC MAP

习语(皆由「做/驱动」义推出):act as「充当」· in the act「当场」· act of God「不可抗力」· get one’s act together「整顿状态」· a hidden agenda「别有图谋」。

NOTES & CAUTIONS

EVIDENCE & METHOD
