PIE root *dheh₁- 「to set, put, place」
COGNATES ACROSS LANGUAGES
*dheh₁- → PGmc *dōną → OE don
do
*dheh₁- → facere「to make, do」(k 扩展);复合词 -dere
fact · factory · fashion · feat · -fy · benefit · condere · credere
*dheh₁- → Greek tithēmi「to put」
the- · theto-G 篇待补
thesis · theme · synthesis · hypothesis · antithesis · parenthesis
ROOT EXTENSIONS
*dhe-dheh₁
*dheh₁-ti-
deed(dǣd):行为、事迹、契据
*-MO- 名词
*dheh₁-mo-
SOUND CHANGES
Grimm’s Law
Reduplication
Great Vowel Shift
古英语长元音后高化:长 o → /uː/(do /duː/、doom /duːm/);长 e → /iː/(deed /diːd/、deem /diːm/)。
拉丁复合词中根 *dheh₁- 非重读时同样弱化为 -dere(condere、credere、tradere)。
*dōną
OE don · 3sg dōþ
过去式 PAST(重叠)
*dhe-dheh₁
OE dyde

OE (ge)dōn
OED Forms)
|---|---|---|---|
| 现在词干 | dōn · 3sg dōþ | don · do · 3sg doth/doeth | do · does |
| 过去式 | dyde(重叠) | did(d)e | did |
| 过去分词 | (ge)dōn | do · ydo · idon | done |

doom(被设定 → 命运)、deem(判定 → 认为)也同此源。

北欧语源ado = at + do
莎士比亚喜剧《Much Ado About Nothing》(《无事生非》)即用此词;现代口语 without further ado「不再啰嗦、闲话少说」。
doff=do(put)+ off,「脱下」;don=do(put)+ on,「穿上」——二者是一对,方向相反,都保留 do 的「放置」古义。
但尊称 Don(先生、阁下,如 Don Juan)出自拉丁语 dominus(主人,同 dominate、domain),与「穿上」的 do+on 只是同形,毫无词源关系。
